What the hell is wrong with Rod Blagojevich?

Why hasn't he resigned already? Is he so completely deluded that he thinks he can actually beat this? With the US Attorney's Office, his own AG, the President-Elect, the entire Democratic Senate Caucus, and just about everyone else either hot on his tail or screaming for him to resign, is he seriously going to ignore all of them? If he's doing it just to nominate someone to the Senate, Harry Reid has made it clear that such a nomination might be held up or blocked all together, so that's just stupid. Does he just want to hang out in office while impeachment proceedings drag on? Most men would see the writing on the wall and spare themselves (and their families) the embarrassment of an agonizingly long process, so is it that he just doesn't [bleeping] care? (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

On the other hand, it occurs to me that the man who really runs Illinois hasn't, to my knowledge, called for him to resign. Paging Hizzoner! Junior Daley, you are needed urgently. Please put an end to the insanity.

I know it's cliche to say that Chicago runs Illinois, but there are quite a few people in downstate Illinois who don't exactly consider themselves under the thumb of the Mayor of Chicago. If Chicago were truly it, then President-elect Obama's seat would currently be in the hands of Carol Moseley-Braun. So thank downstate Illinois for voting her out and giving Obama the chance to run for that seat in 2004.

John,

Well put. I don't, however, mean to suggest that Mayor Daley controls the fates of all politicians in the state. Rather, I argue that if he says to do something, most Democrats in the state will scurry to carry out his wishes. And specifically, Blagojevich, to whom Daley has been quite the political benefactor (they served together in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Daley helped Blagojevich get elected to the Illinois legislature, the US House of Representatives, and the governor's mansion) would probably listen if Daley came out and said that Blagojevich needs to resign. Besides, don't you think Mayor Daley telling Blagojevich that the curtain is coming down and it is time to stop embarrassing the party would get Blagojevich to finally step down?

Understood. As to whether Daley can convince Blago to step down, I will answer with a resounding, "maybe," and suggest that impeachment or losing his official duties involuntarily may have a little more of an impact.

Oh, no doubt impeachment will do the trick. I'm just trying to figure a way to get the jackass out of office faster, and I'm of the opinion that Mayor Daley saying, "Hey stupid! Resign, now!" might do the trick. Certainly it couldn't hurt.
